The Corporation engaged in various major projects during the year, some of which were carried over from the previous reporting period. All the projects were in line with the Corporation’s efforts to deliver adequately on its mandate.
North South Carrier Scheme I
The scheme was not in operation for the first quarter of the year under review due to a shutdown to enable construction of three valve chambers and the installation of three isolation valves between BPT2 at Dikate Lands and Palapye Waterworks. Due to this Mahalapye, Palapye and their surroundings were supplied by Department of Water Affairs for the duration of the shutdown. The NSCI was re-opened in the second quarter and remained operational for the rest of the reporting period.
North South Carrier Scheme II
No significant progress was made on the implementation of the project and by the close of the period under review the anticipated completion of the NSCII was estimated at 2015. As at 31st March 2009 the project was on hold as the Ministry of Minerals, Energy & Water Resources and the Ministry of Finance & Development Planning discussed its funding.
Water Sector Reforms
Following a Ministerial Directive for the Corporation to take over water supply to all villages in Botswana and all wastewater services by 2012 and 2014 respectively, WUC did a significant amount of preparatory work towards this project. Infrastructure audits for Mogoditshane, Tlokweng & the North East District were completed and public and staff consultations in the said areas done.
Francistown Water Supply Master Plan
The project was completed during the reporting period and all facilities put to use. These included the Shashe Water Works upgrade, the 20Ml reservoir and the Shashe/Gerald Estates Pipeline.
Selebi Phikwe Water Supply Master Plan
Construction of pipelines, 17.5Ml and 250M3 concrete water tower and reservoir respectively, were completed as part of the project and were due for hand-over in April 2009. The Waterworks Extension was due for completion in December 2009.
Lobatse, Sowa Water Supply Master Plans and Jwaneng Reticulation Upgrade
For the three projects, pre-investment studies were awarded to a local consulting company and the projects were scheduled for completion in 2010.
Proposed Reclamation of Gaborone Waste Water for Potable Use
The Corporation was granted permission by the Board Tender Committee to undertake pre-qualification as part of the tender procedure. By the end of the reporting period, the draft pre-qualification document was under review prior to inviting interested parties to tender.
