Botswana has a dry, semi-arid climate. Rainfall
is erratic and sporadic, with a mean annual rainfall of 250
mm in the south-west to over 650 mm in the north-east of the
country. The main rainy season occurs in the summer months
between November and April, with significant variations from
year to year and periods of severe drought. As a rule, annual
rainfall is exceeded by loss of moisture through evaporation
and transpiration by plants. It is crucial that the known
water resources are protected from pollution, and that water
demand management and conservation measures are introduced
if we are to continue meeting the present and future demands.
